9-13 September 2018 The Board Secretary Workshop – Manama, Bahrain

This workshop was hosted by the National Bank of Bahrain and the objective of this programme was to provide board secretaries with the knowledge, skills and practical tips for carrying out their duties. GCC BDI is offering a Board Secretary Certification Programme –  a participant will become certified by GCC Board Directors Institute once they have completed all four workshops and passed the four multiple choice exams.

5 September 2018 GCC BDI & the Institute of Finance have signed the MoU – Riyadh, KSA

The Institute of Finance (IOF) in Saudi Arabia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UAE-based GCC Board Directors Institute (GCC BDI) to enhance cooperation in training and development.  Jane Valls, Executive Director of GCC BDI, said: “We are pleased to sign this MoU with the Institute of Finance. We look forward to working with IOF in programs related to members of board of directors and develop a strong and long-lasting relations between both entities.”

1-2 August 2018 Best Practices For Governing Business Cyber Risk – London, UK

The 2 day workshop was highly interactive with case studies and board activities. The objective of this workshop;

-Better understand the risks and latest trends in cyber attacks
-Understand cyber security best practices
-Understand the role of the board
-Learn how to design and implement an effective cyber-security governance strategy

Richard Cross had led the workshop, he is a global senior executive and facilitator with multi-national experience. He assists clients with developing risk management frameworks, conducts specialist risk assessments, and provides risk training.

11-12 July 2018 Risk Management Master Class – London, UK

The 2 day workshop was highly interactive with case studies and board activities. This workshop objectives is to highlight the role of the board v management in overseeing risk, to understand the risk management and corporate governance, to discuss common global risk standards, and  covered various topics related to  Risk.

14 May 2018 The Board Composition and Diversity Semina– Abu Dhabi, UAE

GCC Board Directors Institute, in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Center for Corporate Governance, delivererd a seminar: “Board Composition and Diversity – Why is it so Important?”, at the Abu Dhabi Chamber. The seminar was well-attended and participants heard GCC BDI’s Executive Director Jane Valls discuss board composition, the essential skills and competencies for a director, the value of independent directors and the benefits of board diversity.

GCC BDI successfully concludes its workshop “Mastering the Boardroom”  held in Riyadh, KSA on 9-10 May 2018. This workshop is specifically designed for seasoned board members seeking to further develop their knowledge on professional directorship matters, looking to take on more senior roles and who can enrich the sessions by sharing their experiences with their peers.

1-3 May 2018 10th Annual Board Secretary Conference – Dubai, UAE

GCC BDI has featured at 10th Annual Board Secretary Conference, Dubai. A three-day 10th Annual Board Secretary conference has taken place in Dubai on May 1-3 2018. The event, organised by Marcus Evans Conferences, aims to equip attendees with essential insights into topics ranging from: – The future of board secretaries – Corporate governance for a diverse business growth – Succession planning the future role – Optimising the anti-corruption framework.  Jane Valls, GCC BDI Executive Director, given a talk on the Benefits of Board Evaluation at the event and enlightening delegates with her extensive corporate governance experience in the region.

25-26 April 2018 Risk Prevention, Crisis Management & Communications – Dubai, UAE

GCC BDI 2-day workshop (25-26 April) entitled “Risk Prevention, Crisis Management and Communications” and this was facilitated by Dr. Bert van Walbeek, he has been a Hotelier for 45 years and Marketer of Tourism for 35 years and lecturer for 15 years. The workshop was well attended and led to some very interactive discussions.

7 March 2018 YBA KANOO joins GCC BDI as a Corporate Affiliate – Manama, Bahrain

21 February 2018 GCC Board Directors Institute welcomes its 1000th member – Manama, Bahrain

Mr. Mohammed Al-Shroogi, Chairman of GCC Board Directors Institute (GCC BDI) and Co-CEO of Investcorp is pleased to announce that the GCC Board Directors Institute (GCC BDI) has reached over a thousand members in December 2017. Sami Ahmed Abdullah Aljamea, Operations Head of National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) is the 1000th member to join the largest and most influential network of board directors and senior business executives in the GCC.

20 – 21 February 2018 Foundations of Directorship Workshop – Manama, Bahrain

Investcorp hosted the GCC BDI  “Foundations of Directorship Workshop” in their offices in Bahrain. This event represents a valuable platform to share knowledge and discuss a range of issues and challenges facing our region. It is only through sharing real world experience that we can understand the importance of good governance, a crucial element that supports sustainability and investment appeal of companies. 26 participants from leading Bahraini and Saudi Arabian companies attend the 2 day workshop which focused on board effectiveness, good corporate governance and best practices in directorship. The participants particularly enjoyed the networking and the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skill sets

30 – 31  January 2018  Getting the Best Out of Board Committees  Workshop – Dubai, UAE

GCC BDI 2-day workshop entitled “Getting the Best Out of Board Committees” which was facilitated by Sharon Ditchburn, the Founder and Managing Director of Capital Advantage. Sharon emphasized during the workshop that “The Board is the focal point of the corporate governance system and is ultimately accountable and responsible for the performance and affairs of the Company”.The workshop was well attended and led to some very interactive discussions.

11- 12 December 2017 Building Better Boards Workshop – Jeddah, KSA

GCC BDI organized this workshop in collaboration with King Abdullah Medical City (KAMC) in Jeddah on 11-12 December entitled: “Building Better Boards” consisting of two highly interactive days including case studies and activities covering various contemporary corporate governance and board topics. This workshop was led by Michael Parker, Senior Partner of Parkers USA. This workshop was a refresher for the participants who enjoyed the variety of topics ranging from: the principles of effective corporate governance, KSA regulations, latest trends, current challenges of sitting on a board, the role of the board and management in setting Strategy and Risk Management, the Best practice of Highly Effective Boards, Sharia Principles, the importance of Diversity.

9 November 2017 – The Effective Board Secretary Workshop – Dubai, UAE

GCC BDI organized “The Effective Board Secretary Workshop,” on 9th November 2017 in Dubai, UAE. It was a full day workshop for experienced board secretaries wishing to keep up to date with the latest best practices and for new board secretaries wishing to improve their knowledge and skills. This GCC BDI workshop was led by Dr Chris Pierce, CEO of Global Governance Services Ltd. Dr Pierce works with policy makers, directors and boards all over the world.

6 – 8 November 2017, The World of Directorship Workshop – Dubai, UAE

The World of Directorship workshop was held in Dubai, this 3-day program is designed to provide aspiring and new directors with an overview and update of the principles and concepts underpinning corporate governance and the duties and responsibilities of directors. Discussions are focused on the importance of corporate governance, the frameworks and models that can be used to implement the practices and the duties and responsibilities of directors in executing sound governance practice.

This complimentary event is designed to encourage connections and community among our prestigious network of board directors to reconnect with fellow alumnus and meet new members.

11 September 2017 –  IT Governance & Cyber Security Workshop – Dubai, UAE

This workshop objectives is to highlight the role of leadership in strategizing, governing and leading a cyber security program, what are the present top current cyber threats that pose a risk and to gain an understanding of some of the key capabilities that today’s hackers possess and what tactics they use in order to infiltrate and compromise an environment. The course also demonstrates various hacking case studies to clearly emphasize how hackers strategize and attack your environment and to understand how you can initiate a cyber security program and improve the ones you have.

10 September 2017, UAE Investor Forum – Dubai, UAE

The GCC Board of Directors Institute (GCC BDI), in collaboration with the UAE International Investors Council (UAE IIC), hosted a forum bringing together board members, business leaders and subject matter experts to discuss the importance of corporate governance in a regional context. While still a developing theme, the forum highlighted that good corporate governance, whether in a family business, large listed company or semi-public entity, is key to unlocking value.

1-2 August 2017, Future Trends & Strategic Thinking Workshop – London, UK

GCC BDI Future Trends & Strategic Thinking workshop was held in London with international facilitator Keith Coats. This workshop focused on understanding the full leadership and strategic organizational implications of the global context of disruption and developing models, frameworks and ideas in order to be ‘futurefit’ and to meet the undoubted challenges of tomorrow. Through interactive discussions, role plays, case studies and pragmatic experience-sharing, the participants explored and analyzed potential solutions, tools and effective practices.

25 July 2017 –  Managing Conflict of Interest Workshop – Dubai, UAE

GCC BDI Managing Conflicts of Interest Workshop was run in collaboration with Allen & Overy in Dubai with facilitator Nicholas Stuart. This 1-day interactive workshop covered understanding what constitutes a conflict of interest, Boards and Directors Roles and Responsibilities in relation to such conflicts, the legal duties of Boards, dealing with dilemmas and practical steps for managing conflicts of interest, global trends and best practices. For most participants, it was a good combination of new learning, theory and practice.

22 May Riyadh/ 24 May Dubai – Joint Venture Directorship Workshop

This GCC BDI workshop was led by Water Street director, Geoff Walker, and Jane Valls, GCC BDI Executive Director, both with long experience in board strategy and practice.

This one-day workshop guides through the unique responsibilities and challenges of JV board directorship. The participants of the workshop gained valuable knowledge and tools and also enjoyed the interaction and the networking.

9 May 2017 – Bloomberg Event – Women in Finance Industry was held in Riyadh, KSA.

Women in Finance Networking event was held on 9 May 2017 organised in Riyadh by Bloomberg with Jane Valls GCC BDI Executive Director as guest speaker. She discussed Why do we need Women in the Boardroom? A focus on women in the Finance Industry on a global scale.

This event was exclusive to bring attention on diversity especially conscious of trying to encourage women to consider a career given the typical stereotypes about the financial industry.

29 – 30 April 2017 – Building Better Boards  Workshop in Manama, Bahrain

GCC BDI Building Better Boards Workshop was held in Manama, Bahrain with international expert facilitator Dr. Chris Pierce.

This complimentary event is designed to encourage connections and community among our prestigious network of board directors to reconnect with fellow alumni and meet new members.

11 – 12 April 2017 – Building Better Boards Workshop was held in Jeddah, KSA.

GCC BDI organized this workshop in collaboration with Mohammed Bin Salman College for Business and Entrepreneurship (MBSC) in King Abdullah Economic City entitled: “Building Better Board” consisting of two highly interactive days including case studies and activities covering various contemporary corporate governance and board topics. This workshop was led by Prof Bob Garratt, author of “The Fish Rots from the Head”.

This workshop was a refresher for the participants who enjoyed the variety of topics ranging from: the principles of effective corporate governance, KSA regulations, latest trends, current challenges of sitting on a board, how to execute strategy, managing risk and board effectiveness.

3 – 5 April 2017 – Finance for Non- Finance Directors Workshop in Dubai, UAE

The GCC BDI workshop on Corporate Finance, held yesterday in Dubai, was designed to equip board directors & C-Suite with a good appreciation of corporate finance, understand the fundamentals of business valuation & to evaluate the economic consequences of strategic decisions.
For most participants it was a great refresher and update on some out of date skills; for others it was a good combination of new learning, theory and practice.

29 March 2017 – The Role of the Board Secretary Seminar was held in Abu Dhabi.

GCC BDI in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Center of Corporate Governance co-hosted a forum titled: “The Changing Role of the Board Secretary” today in Abu Dhabi. The 2 hour interactive seminar was positively received by Senior Chairperson from British Petroleum, BBG Group, AL Ghurair Group, Abu Dhabi University, ATKINS, Knights & Walker London, Foodco Holding and many more.
Key note speaker Jane Valls expressed that “Within any organization, a Corporate Secretary’s duties include ensuring the integrity of the governance framework, being responsible for the efficient administration of a company, ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements and implementing decisions made by the Board of Directors. This specialized role of the modern Board Secretary has emerged to position them as one of the key governance professionals within the organization.”

21 – 22 March 2017 – Risk Managment Master Class for Directors in Manama, Bahrain

GCC BDI Risk Management Master Class for Directors 2-day workshop with John Crawley, Master Trainer, with 13 years’ expertise in running, as well as advising, businesses and boards in private and public sectors.

He is an expert trainer for the Institute of Risk Management. He concluded the workshop by saying “senior management and governing bodies collectively have responsibility and accountability for setting the organization’s objectives, defining strategies to achieve those objectives, and establishing governance structures and processes to best manage the risks in accomplishing those objectives.

16 March 2017 – Corporate Sustainability Leadership Workshop was held in Riyadh.

GCC BDI organized the “Corporate Sustainability Leadership Workshop,” at Al Faisaliah Resort Hotel in Riyadh, KSA. This one day workshop was led by Dr. Prakash Sanju Deenapanray, Managing Director, Ecological Living in Action Ltd.
Dr Deenapanray illustrated the business case for sustainability, the emerging tools, processes and partnerships to support sustainability and also described the Sustainability Model by saying that the “Business operations, while they create value for society, also have detrimental impacts on society and the natural environment. We have to design systems that are coherent and aligned with the principles of natural ecosystems.”

8 – 9 March 2017 – The Arab Regulators Conference in Abu Dhabi, UAE

The Arab Regulators Conference took place on (8-9 March) in Abu Dhabi. The two-day conference was an opportunity for regulators, bankers, & board directors to engage in an open dialogue on how to strengthen the development of corporate governance across the region. The conference was attended by over 160 delegates from 17 different countries from both the regulatory & the private sectors. H.E Abdullatif Al Othman, Chairman (SAIIC) & the first chairman of GCC BDI, urged attendees to adopt the highest international standards of corporate governance, to help move the region from frontier markets to emerging markets to developed markets. This, he believes, is the key to economic growth.

8 January 2017 – GCC BDI Breakfast Forum with Prof David Beatty Abu Dhabi, UAE

GCC BDI opened year 2017 with a Breakfast Forum in collaboration with Mubadala held in Abu Dhabi on 8th January. Top international speaker Prof. David Beatty, Conway Director of the Clarkson Centre for Business Ethics & Board Effectiveness, Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. He discussed “Hot Topics in Governance” covering shareholder activism and its transformative impact on Boards; the digital tsunami and business disruption; the critical role of the chair; and the decline of the publicly traded company & rise of dual class shares. It was a very informative and enlightening forum which engaged various directors, executives and managers from different companies.

7 – 8 December 2016 – GCC BDI Mastering the Boardroom 2-day workshop was held in Bahrain

GCC BDI Mastering the Boardroom 2-day workshop was held in Bahrain on 7-9 December 2016 and hosted by Investcorp. Mastering the Boardroom program is created to highlight best practices in educating future leaders, and helping companies develop a collective community based on professional development. 27 – 29  November 2016 – GCC Board Directors Institute has exhibited at the GPCA Annual Forum 

GCC BDI has participated as an exhibitor at the GPCA annual forum to showcase our Institute as a professional international institute for GCC Board Directors. This GPCA flagship event has become a key feature on the global petrochemical and chemical industry agenda and, in 2015, the event broke all attendance records, attracting over 2,000 attendees from 42 countries.

24 November 2016 – GCC BDI organized the Seminar titled : “Developing the Ethical Work Culture” in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Center of Corporate Governance 

GCC BDI organized the seminar titled: “Developing an Ethical Work Culture” in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Center for Corporate Governance in Abu Dhabi on 24 November 2016. Ms. Jane Valls, Executive Director, GCC Board Directors Institute was the speaker and explained why companies should care about ethics and also elaborated on frameworks for ethics management, corruption prevention and current business ethics best practices.

1 November 2016 – GCC BDI organized the Joint Venture Directorship workshop in Manama, Bahrain

GCC BDI has teamed up with world-leading advisory firm Water Street Partners to hold a workshop on JV board directorship. This was one-day workshop guide through the unique responsibilities and challenges of JV board directorship. It was a successful workshop, where new JV board directors have to get the insights of how to artfully manage commercial conflicts of interest. They also learned how to exercise influence over a business or asset that they do not control, and they also prepared to forcefully champion the venture within their own company – securing skills and resources.

27 October 2016 – The GCC Board Directors Institute and Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) have signed the MOU

The Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) and GCC Board Directors Institute (BDI) have signed an MOU designed to strengthen corporate governance among listed companies in the UAE. The signing ceremony took place on Thursday, 27 October, in Abu Dhabi.The MOU aims to increase cooperation between the two parties, particularly in the areas of advocacy, and raise awareness of the importance of effective corporate governance.

17- 20 October 2016 Foundations of Directorship & Mastering the Boardroom – Muscat, Oman

GCC BDI marked another success in line with its vision to make a positive impact on the economies and societies of the region by promoting professional directorship and raising the level of board effectiveness in Oman. It was 4 days of director workshops in Muscat including Mastering the Boardroom with Salman Ahmad, Managing Director of McKinsey & Company, Pakistan. The participants of the workshop gained valuable knowledge and tools and also enjoyed the interaction and the networking.

10 October 2016 Dr Sanju Deenapanray – Managing Director of Ecological Living in Action, talks on Sustainability

In collaboration with Middlesex University, all students and lectures had the pleasure of a unique discussion on the ecological system. Dr Deenapanray talked about ‘Sustainability – what are we doing to the planet?’. Dr Deenapanray has worked in various fields in the capacity of researcher, project coordinator and consultant in Taiwan, France South Korea, Australia, Sweden and Mauritius. He has been a Member of UNEP’s Expert Meeting Group on developing an Inclusive Green Growth Index. His passion is an ecologically sustainable future and making this possible. This event also marked the start of the collaboration between Middlesex University and GCC BDI.

3 October 2016 – Breakfast Forum with Simon Walker in collaboration with BBG Group

Simon Walker, Director General, Institute of Directors, UK and President of the Global Network of Director Institutes (GNDI) gave a talk on Brexit – Britain’s Prospects Post Brexit . This event was organized by GCC Board Directors Institute in collaboration with the British Business Group in Dubai.

2 October 2016 – The GCC Board Directors Institute and Saudi Aramco conclude the 4th Chairman Summit in Riyadh.
